Have you ever stopped wonder why sickness and suffering is increasing year after year in our country?  We have more cases of heart disease, diabetes, cancer, arthritis and many other chronic diseases than ever before.  It is pandemic and is destroying the very fabric of our society.

The most prevailing theory is these problems are genetic: passed on from generation to generation and there is little, if anything, we can do about it.  It would seem a plausible conclusion because it is after all genes that make up who we are, is it not?  A closer look reveals that in most cases they are not ultimately responsible for our health or lack thereof.

Genes are essentially “blueprints.”  They contain all the information required to build a healthy strong body.  Another fact about our genes is they have not changed for thousands of years.  This dates to a time when there was no evidence of heart disease, cancer, diabetes, etc.  Clearly blaming the “blueprints” for our current health problems is wrong.

What happens when you use a good blueprint but build a house out of poor materials?  You get a house that will not last and will need constant repairs.  How about having good genes but supplying them with poor materials to work with? You end up as the average American with a body that will not last and more sickness and suffering than there should ever be.

We need to give our genes good materials so they can build a strong healthy body.  Exercise and movement (including chiropractic adjustments), eating good  wholesome and nutritious foods, and a positive mental attitude are necessary supplies for our genes to express health.  Aristotle once said “We are what we repeatedly do…”  This applies to many areas of our life, including our health.  Changing the direction of the health of our  country starts with each of us making more healthy choices.  Make a decision today to add one good “material” to build a long, healthy life.

Health experts continue to conduct research designed to learn more about chiropractic care and how it works, but many people still do not understand some of its fundamental aspects.  A lack of information is almost guaranteed to cause myths and misconceptions.  Below are five common myths about chiropractic care, along with the actual truth behind them.

Myth No. 1: Any Benefits from Chiropractic Care Are Simply Due to the Placebo Effect
A great deal of research has proven that chiropractic care truly is effective, with benefits that are not just the result of the placebo effect.  In other words, chiropractic’s benefits are “real” and not just psychological or “in people’s heads.”

It is important to understand chiropractic is a form of health care focused on the body’s nervous system.  It improves body functions by correcting issues associated with the spine and nerve system.  The goal of chiropractic care is to restore your body’s innate, natural ability to heal itself and retain its ability to function normally.  A quick Google search will turn up scores of case studies that prove the benefits of chiropractic care.

Myth No. 2: Chiropractic Adjustments are Risky
This misconception is one of the most widespread.  Many people are afraid to seek chiropractic care because they believe it can cause injury and potentially lead to more serious problems.  Even worse, some still think that chiropractors are not licensed doctors.

First of all, and most importantly, chiropractic is a licensed, professional healthcare field.  Chiropractors must complete a rigorous educational and training program and pass National Boards in order to be licensed to practice, and are recognized as primary healthcare providers.

Experts are essentially unanimous in their assessment of the safety of chiropractic care.  It is an extremely safe, gentle and effective way to regain and maintain health naturally.  Chiropractic is actually safer than taking medication with its associated side effects.  Even over the counter medications are considered more dangerous than getting adjusted.

Myth No. 3: Chiropractic Care is Painful
Chiropractors have years of training and clinical experience and offer multiple adjusting techniques so the care can be specific and gentle.  Rarely, a patient might experience some minimal discomfort.  Chiropractic care involves change in the body which can produce some soreness, but no more so than a person who starts a new exercise routine and feels sore the next few days (especially with weight training).  If you compare this to the long and painful recovery of surgery it is extremely insignificant.

Myth No. 4: Too Many Serious Side Effects are Associated with Chiropractic Care
You do not need to worry about serious negative side effects due to chiropractic adjustments.  Some people have been led to believe adjustments can lead to stroke or even death.  Far to the contrary, chiropractic is recognized as one of the safest forms of healthcare.  Risk of serious adverse events from chiropractic adjustments is estimated at worst to be 1 in 200,000 (or 0.0005%).  Its high degree of safety explains why increasing numbers of people are turning to chiropractic care in search of an alternative to medication and surgery.  In reality, if there are any common side effects, they are positive effects such as increased energy, improved sleep, stronger immune system, and better digestive function to name a few.

Myth No. 5: Chiropractic Care is Too Costly
Careful analysis reveals that chiropractic care is actually one of the most affordable forms of healthcare, especially when compared to the cost of surgery.  Statistics of patients who regularly utilize chiropractors as their primary care physicians show it reduces the need for:  hospitalization by 60.2%, pharmaceutical usage by 85%,  outpatient surgeries and procedures by 62%, and overall global healthcare costs by 50%!

We all experience some level of stress on a daily basis.  Stress, in itself, is not harmful to us.  It becomes a problem when the amount of stress is too great for a person to handle, or when the body cannot adequately adapt to stress.  Dealing with stress starts with knowing its different forms and understanding how it affects the body.

Stress exists in three forms.  Here they are with examples of each:

1.    Physical Stress:  The birth process, sports, accidents, repetitive activities, slips/falls, poor posture, work

2.    Emotional Stress:  Worry, financial woes, hectic schedules, heartbreak, loss of a loved one, divorce, job loss/change of work

3.    Chemical Stress:  Processed foods, fast food, drugs (prescribed and over the counter), cigarettes, alcohol, caffeine

The effects on the body are wide ranging and numerous.  Some of the common long term effects include but are not limited to:

            Allergies                                       High Blood Pressure              Anxiety

            Skin Problems                             Headaches/Migraines             Back Pain

Muscle Aches and Pains               Digestive disorders                Heart Disease

            Stroke                                         Insomnia / Fatigue                 Depression

Everyone is affected differently and can handle different levels of stress.  Here are some tips to fight back against stress:

·         Think in a positive way

·         Eat the right food

·         Exercise on a regular basis

·         Get enough rest and fun (laugh)

·         Get adjusted regularly,  it will help balance your stressed nervous system

At Hoisington Family Chiropractic it is our goal to help our patients understand these different forms of stress and how they affect the body, and to limit the negative effects of stress by keeping the body in balance with state of the art chiropractic care.

One of the many benefits of Chiropractic care is it can provide excellent help toward fighitng against and warding off the flu.  Spinal adjustments provided by chiropractors have an excellent track record in increasing the immune function of the body and helping it to stay healthy - especially during cold and flu season!

The reason for this success is because Chiropractic works to increase the function of the immune system.  It does so by correcting spinal misalignments, known as subluxations.  These subluxations are known to cause interference with the proper function of the nervous system by placing pressure or stress upon the nerves themselves.  As the nervous system controls all bodily functions, including those of the immune system, chiropractic adjustments go a long way toward contributing to overall health and wellness.

The interaction between the nervous and immune systems has been shown to be positively affected by chiropractic adjustment.  “Through research, we know that Chiropractic has beneficial effects on immunogobluins (a natural occurring antibody), B-lymphocytes (white blood cells), pulmonary (lungs) function and other immune system processes,” said Dr. Matthew McCoy, who serves as the editor of the Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research.

One such study tested the response of white blood cells as important infection fighters.  When a Chiropractic adjustment was applied to the middle of the back, it was found that white blood cells were present in significantly higher number than prior to the adjustment.  These white blood cells are what find and destroy invading viruses and bacteria, including the flu virus!

Chiropractors are concerned with the total well-being of the individual and educate their patients toward positive health and lifestyle choices.  Regular adjustments, getting ample rest, drinking adequate water, regular exercise, choosing a proper diet, and correctly  using multivitamins and minerals are essential to staying resistant to colds and flu.

Healthcare costs are skyrocketing.  Insurance premiums continue to rise year after year, while insurance coverage for the patient is decreasing.  The healthcare system cannont be sustained at the rate we are going.  It si true that healthcare reform is needed.  This reform needs to be more than just cutting costs and limiting care in the current medical system.  We can’t continue treating diseases and symptoms while ignoring the causes of these problems and expect any real reform to take place.  In the words of Albert Einstein, “doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results” is the definition of insanity.

Health comes from inside.  We need to do everything we can to ensure our bodies are working well from the inside out, not the other way around.  Chiropractors recognize this and are poised to be the leaders of the reform that is truly needed.  Statistics of patients who regularly utilze chiropractors as their primary care physicians show it reduces the need for:

  • Hospitalizations by 60.2%
  • Hospital days by 59%
  • Pharmaceutical usage by 85%
  • Outpatient surgeries and procedures by 62%
  • Overall global health care cost by 50%

Numbers tell a story and these numbers clearly show chiropractic can and should play a major role in refoming healthcare and controlling the astornomical costs in the current health care system.  Getting adjusted regularly is a win-win.

See your chiropractor and you will benefit from better health and save money too!

Flu season is here again.  People are lining up at every corner to get their flu shots in hopes of staying healthy this season.  Contrary to popular belief, the flu shot is not very effective at preventing the flu or flu related deaths.  The real key to staying healthy at this time of year (and always) is having a STRONG IMMUNE SYSTEM.  This is our primary defense against the flu and any other invader that tries to take over our body.  It prevents illness and helps you recover should you become ill.  You might ask “What can I do to ensure my immune system is in great shape to keep me healthy?”

HERE ARE SOME TIPS FOR BOOSTING YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM:

  • Get Adjusted:  When you get adjusted you increase immune function.  Research shows Chiropractic to have an influence on white blood cell and antibody levels (which are important components of your immune system)
  • Eat a Healthy well balanced Diet:  Give your body the fuel it needs to run well.   You wouldn’t put diesel fuel in a gasoline engine.  Your body also needs proper fuel to function
  • Limit Sugar:  Sugar wipes out your immune system.  Soda, candy, sweets, treats, and juices are loaded with sugar.  Also watch out for and limit High Fructose Corn Syrup (which is also sugar) in many of the processed foods we eat.
  • Exercise:  This will give your immune system a boost!  It increases blood supply and oxygen to your body, which is important in healing.
  • Get Enough Rest:  Sleep is vital to staying healthy.  Your body needs sleep to recover and heal from the daily grind.  Minimum of 6-8 hrs.
  • Vitamin D:  The sunshine vitamin.  If you live in Minnesota between September and May you are low in vitamin D and need to supplement.  It’s important not only for your immune system but also for combating the winter blues (also called Seasonal Affective Disorder or SAD)
  • Probiotics:  This is the good bacteria that lives in the intestines and is important in maximizing your immune health.

Health comes from inside.  Following these tips will have your body in great shape to stay healthy this winter.

Spring is here at last!  For those of us living in the upper Midwest it is an exciting time of year.  Sub-zero weather is in the rearview mirror and we can look forward to sunshine, budding trees and blooming flowers.  For millions of Americans it is also a time for their dreaded allergies to come back to life.  Itchy watery eyes, dripping noses, tickly throats and sneezes are here.  For this reason many people dread spring rather than look forward to enjoying the beautiful outdoors.  Allergies do not necessarily have to be a life sentence.  There is hope.

Allergy sufferers have praised chiropractic for over a century.  Many have experienced dramatic improvement or elimination of their dreaded allergy symptoms as a result of chiropractic care.  Chiropractic care is not a treatment for allergies however.  The goal of chiropractic care is to locate and correct a serious type of spine and nervous system stress call the vertebral subluxation complex.  By releasing stress on the nervous system, chiropractic permits the immune system to function more effectively:  something all allergy sufferers need since a nervous system with less stress functions more efficiently.

One review of patients at a chiropractic college clinic found that pediatric patients commonly had complaints of allergy, ear infection, sinus problems, bed-wetting, respiratory problems and gastrointestinal problems.  Complete or substantial improvement occurred in 61.6%.[i]

For over a hundred years chiropractors have, by reducing nervous system stress caused by vertebral subluxations, helped people adapt better to all the stresses in their environment, including those relating to allergies.

Let chiropractic help you build better health from the inside!
